Travel Guide

Why is it called Pallay Poncho Layo?

According to several investigations carried out at the site, the multicolored shades of the mountain resemble the ponchos worn in Peru.

The poncho is an ancestral and contemporary garment that crosses borders and time.

Location and altitude

This amazing place is located in the Andes of Peru, in the region of Cusco and province of Canas, at 4,791 meters above sea level, an area of considerable elevation. It belongs to the district of Layo that calls it the ‘Pallay Punchu del Apu Tacllo’. Photos posted on Facebook made the mountain gain popularity. Since 2020 it has been a tourist attraction visited by travelers.

Why does it have those colors?

The colors of the mountain Pallay Punchu of Apu Tacllo are due to the mineral composition it has: the pink color is due to the red clay, mudstones (mud) and arilites (sand). whitish, due to the white quartz sandstone. The different browns and purples, due to limonites and marls, rich in calcium carbonate.

The red is formed by clays (iron) and clays belonging to the upper Tertiary. The green is due to the compound of phyllites and clays rich in ferro magnesium. The earthy brown is the product of fanglomerate formed by manganese-bearing rocks from the Quaternary. Finally, the mustard yellow color is due to the calcareous sandstones rich in sulfur minerals.

The climate, typical of the higher areas of Cusco, is cold. Rain, wind and altitude sickness (soroche) can be major obstacles for visitors. Temperatures can drop below zero degrees Celsius. The best time to participate in this adventure is during the dry season (April to November) when rainfall on the river is less likely. If you plan to visit during the rainy season (December to March), bring a rain poncho.

Flora and fauna

The incredible geography of the area creates a backdrop of typical high Andean animals such as deer and vicuñas. The locals raise horses to provide transportation for visitors. Due to the altitude of this region, the ‘ichu’ or natural grass of the Andes is everywhere.
